German Wine

Wine has been made in Germany for almost 2,000 years. Many of its vineyards clung to steep slopes, overlooking rivers. The Romans built ships to convey the wines of the Mosel back to Rome where they were highly sold. The vineyards of Germany are amongst the most picturesque in the world. While sailing along the Rhine or Mosel one can admire some of the most spectacular and breathtaking sceneries anywhere. The different types of soil found throughout the wine regions contribute significantly to the quality and characteristics of the wines. However, it is the weather that makes the biggest difference. The climate is one of the strongest influences on the quality of the wine. Only in some parts of the United States and Canada are wines grown in the same northerly latitudes as Germany. Germany is fortunate because rivers bordering many of the vineyards, especially the classified sites (First growth, Premier Cru), act as mirrors reflecting the sunshine back onto the vines.

Quality & Reputation

German wines belong to the most expensive and most quality wines in the world. What is due to their very unique and different types of soils. But still they are not very well known outside of Europe. Although among the masses, German wines are still relatively unknown, among wine connoisseurs, wine journalists, wine merchants, wine experts and even by wine producers in other countries German wines are praised. Almost all the top restaurants in the world run at least a couple of wines from Germany on their drinks list. In addition to some of the world best sweet wines, today there are extremely high quality Trocken (dry) wines and red wines. The improvement in quality, initiated by a young generation of well-educated oenologists, has influenced the whole German wine Industry. Germany is producing quality wines which can compete with the highest quality wines in the world. German wine exports have increased by 30% in volume and by over 40% in value during the last three years. There are mainly two reasons for this success: The global renaissance of Riesling, the most important grape variety in Germany, and The tremendous improvement in the quality of red wines, especially Spaetburgunder (Pinot Noir).
